Underage Drinking Town Halls in OregonThe Underage Drinking Prevention Town Hall Meetings are part of a national effort to increase understanding and awareness of underage drinking and its consequences, and to encourage individuals, families, and communities to address the problem. The Meetings are an opportunity for community-based organizations to bring communities together—using helpful materials provided by SAMHSA—and to help raise awareness about the issue of underage drinking. Town Hall Meetings will take place all over America during March and April. Click here for a list of Town Hall meetings scheduled throughout Oregon. Volunteer Opportunity: Oregon Partnership Crisis Lines Spring TrainingOregon Partnership is seeking volunteers to staff its alcohol and drug helpline/suicide crisis lines. Training for volunteers on these crucial lines begins Saturday April 26, 2008. The HelpLine trainings are held on four Saturdays, from 9:00am – 4:00pm, on April 26, and May 10, and May 17. Mandatory ASIST training will be held Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4, from 8:30am – 4:30pm. Attendance at all sessions is required! Participants will receive 56 hours of professional training, an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) certificate, Americorps opportunities for educational scholarship and 225 hours towards ACCBO certification. Oregon Partnership's Alcohol and Drug HelpLine is a free, confidential referral service that provides information about substance abuse and refers clients to professional treatment providers. Fosters to Limit Alcohol in Premixed Drinks and Drops Energy IngredientsResponding to the Australian prime minister's crackdown on binge drinking, Foster's Group Ltd. announced that it will cap the amount of alcohol in its premixed drink products, stop adding "energy" ingredients like caffeine and taurine to drinks, and drop brands like the high-alcohol Cougar XS, a mix of bourbon and cola. Report Shows Cost of Alcohol and DrugsA new report by ECONorthwest, the Northwest's largest economics consulting firm, shows the economic costs of alcohol and drug abuse in Oregon in 2006. We all know the consequences of alcohol and drug abuse extend well beyond the individual user. The human and social consequences are significant and most evidence suggests that, given the incidence of alcohol and drug use in this state, they are greater in Oregon than the rest of the nation. They also come at a great economic cost - one that is shared by all who live and work in Oregon. The 2008 Spring Prevention Summit is presented by Addictions and Mental Health Division (AMH). New Report: Inhalant Use across the Adolescent YearsThe National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) asked respondents aged 12 to 17 questions related to their use of inhalants during their lifetime and in the past month and past year. The report outlines the data from this survey including the use of inhalants, and the use of specific types of inhalants. Click here to read the report. Job Opportunity: State Prevention Specialist/Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition CoordinatorThis employment opportunity is with Addictions and Mental Health (AMH)/Prevention Unit, which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). There is one full-time position located in Salem. This position is management service and is not represented by a union. The Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition Coordinator acts as the representative from the Addictions and Mental Health Division (AMH) concerning developing, implementing, and maintaining sustainability for community substance abuse prevention coalitions including federal Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grantees and coalitions supported by AMH through county financial assistance agreements and other local options.
