Statewide Prescription Drug Turn-In EventsOn March 13, a grassroots Prescription Drug Turn-In Day will be held in a community near you! This statewide turn-in event is an opportunity for your community to take unwanted drugs to a central location for incineration. The Turn-In Day is sponsored and spearheaded by the Oregon Medical Association Alliance, CARSA, Oregon Partnership and other community groups. This first-ever statewide Prescription Drug Turn-In Day will take place in over thirty Oregon cities. With prescription drug abuse on the rise in Oregon and across the country, organizers are asking Oregonians to turn in their expired and unwanted drugs while promoting safe storage of prescription drugs through the "Lock Your Meds" campaign, sponsored by the National Family Partnership. Don't Miss "Teens and Drugs: Prescription for Abuse""Teens and Drugs: Prescription for Abuse" airs this coming weekend on two Portland-area television stations, highlighting the troubling trends involving teens and prescription drug abuse. The TV special, produced by Fox 12 Oregon and Oregon Partnership, includes segments on the statewide Prescription Drug Turn-In Day on March 13, teens and parents offering their experiences with prescription drug abuse, and measures parents can take to keep their kids from abusing prescription drugs. The special will air Saturday March 6 on KPDX(49) at 8 pm and Sunday March 7 on KPTV(12) at 5:30 pm. United Kingdom Alcohol Epidemic Fact-Finding Mission - A Firsthand LookThe United Kingdom has a serious alcohol epidemic thanks to deregulation! Pamela Erickson, former director of the OLCC, saw it firsthand. She just returned from a fact-finding trip where she met with alcohol policy experts, public health officials and Members of Parliament. Erickson works with Oregon Partnership and community advocates on alcohol policy issues at the state and local level. Click here for more information. Training Opportunity: Grant Writing WorkshopThe City of Silverton and Grant Writing USA invite you to attend a GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP March 22-23. If you're ready to learn how to write and find grants, then this is the class for you. All city, county and state agencies as well as nonprofit organizations, colleges and universities are welcome to attend. You do not need to work in the same profession as the host agency. Online OHSU Research Study for ParentsMoms and Dads, do you have a child ages 5-18? Are you willing to help complete an online study? The long-term goal of this research is to develop interventions to optimize the cognitive development of children exposed to recreational or prescription drugs during pregnancy. The parents of children that were or were not exposed are both needed. The anonymous and confidential online research takes about 25 minutes. It involves answering questions about the history and current behavior of your child. The survey is offered through Oregon Health & Science University using specialized software designed to provide maximal security for highly sensitive information. JTO Funding CrisisJoin Together, a national leader in advancing effective alcohol and drug policy, prevention and treatment, has once again established a partnership with the Boston University School of Public Health. However, the short-term outlook is bleak for Join Together. Join Together will cease to exist by the fall of 2010 unless it raises money needed to fund programs through 2011.
