Parenting for Prevention - The Parenting Event You Don't Want to Miss!Parents of children in grade school, middle school and high school, here’s the special summer event you don’t want to miss! When it comes to alcohol and drug prevention, parents are the biggest influence on kids. Hear from an expert panel on what you can do to keep your kids away from alcohol and drugs. The parenting for prevention panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, June 25, from Noon - 1:30 pm at Montgomery Park located at 2701 NW Vaughn Avenue, in Portland. Underage Drinking Special to Air on Portland TV StationsAs part of Alcohol Awareness Month, a half-hour television special, “Underage Drinking: A Call to Action” will be broadcast Sunday, April 27th on two Portland area stations. The special will air on KPTV Fox 12 at 6 p.m. and on KPDX PDX 49, at 9 p.m. For the past month, the KPTV news department has produced stories involving underage drinking, including a piece on the Oregon Partnership YouthLine, a prevention program at the Walt Morey Middle School in Troutdale and coverage of recent underage drinking Town Halls in Tigard and Beaverton. Training Opportunity: 2008 Northwest Alcohol ConferenceThe 2008 Northwest Alcohol Conference will be held in Boise, Idaho on July 17 & 18, at the Boise Centre on the Grove in downtown Boise. The conference will feature a variety of sessions on underage drinking, DUII, underage and high risk drinking on college campuses, community policing strategies for alcohol enforcement, and a host of other topics. The conference is sponsored by the Boise Police Department, and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Boise Police Activities League (PAL) youth alcohol program. This program focuses on the prevention and enforcement of underage drinking, over-service of alcohol in restaurants and bars, and other alcohol problems. Click here for more information. More Young Oregonians Losing Driving PrivilegesOregonians under age 21 should think twice about drinking alcohol – as of Jan. 1, they can lose their driver licenses without even getting into a car. Passed by the 2007 Oregon Legislature, the new law expands the power of courts to deny driving privileges to individuals age 18 to 20 who are convicted of possession, use or abuse of alcohol. According to records at Driver and Motor Vehicles, during the first three months of 2008, there were 948 court denials of driving privileges for drug and alcohol violations compared to 596 during the first three months of 2007. The 2008 NAMIWALKS for the Mind of AmericaThe 2008 NAMIWALKS for the Mind of America is a 2.8-mile walking event for all people who are dedicated to improving the lives of all of those affected by serious mental illness. This fundraising event will be held in 65+ communities around the country in May 2008. All walkers are encouraged to raise as much money as possible from family, friends, co-workers and business associates in support of their participation in the Walk. This board is legislatively charged with the responsibility of developing a health reform proposal by the 2009 Legislative Session.
