New National Drug Control Policy Praised for Focus on PreventionPrevention leaders were on hand in Washington, D.C., for the announcement of the new National Drug Control Policy, praising its focus on prevention to reduce drug use in the United States. “This balanced approach includes a genuine emphasis on drug prevention and treatment along with enforcement,” said Judy Cushing, President/CEO of Oregon Partnership, after meeting with Gil Kerlikowske, Director of National Drug Control Policy and other members of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. The strategy emphasizes the development of community-based prevention programs focused on young people, early intervention opportunities by health care providers, and helping communities implement evidence-based prevention initiatives. Alcohol & Drug Policy Commission Report: Improving Oregon’s Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Recovery StrategyA new report, titled "Improving Oregon’s Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Recovery Strategy," was submitted to Governor Kulongoski by the Alcohol & Drug Policy Commission this week. The plan outlined in the report could save Oregon taxpayers 5.4 billion dollars and calls for creating a first-class prevention and recovery system. Click here to read the report. Marijuana Goes Mainstream in Southern OregonMarijuana has been a lucrative underground business for decades, but as pot laws become more liberalized it’s become a big part of the above-ground economy. Unfortunately, the illegal side of the pot business is also exploding. An article, from Oregon Business Magazine, also points out a 2006 study that states that cannabis is the nation’s most lucrative cash crop, worth $35.8 billion annually, more than corn and wheat combined. Legal Pot Causing Overdoses: Synthetic Marijuana Now Being Sold in Local Head ShopsIn a recent article by the Portland Tribune, Oregon health officials say they may be seeing the first cases of overdose resulting from a new herbal product laced with a synthetic marijuana compound. The new drug, legal and undetectable with current drug tests, is sold under a variety of names, including K2, Spice, Dragon Smoke and legal pot.
