Don't Miss: Internet Safety & Privacy - Practical Advice for Parenting Your High-Tech Kids!

Hear the very latest on what YOU can do to keep your family safe and informed about the ever-changing online universe. The training will be led by Shawn Marshall, Licensed Professional Counselor at the Children’s Program, a Portland diagnostic & treatment clinic. Shawn says “Kids aren’t as savvy when it comes to the unexpected ramifications of instant messaging, their MySpace page and all the other uses of the Internet. And that’s where informed parenting comes in.”

The Internet Safety training will take place on Wednesday, October 1, from Noon - 1:30 pm at Montgomery Park located at 2701 NW Vaughn Avenue, in Portland. Registration is only $30, including lunch and free parking.

SAMHSA Administrator Resigns to Take Iraq Post

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Mike Leavitt today announced that Terry Cline, Ph.D., will become the Department's next Health Attaché and representative at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, effective August 31st.

Dr. Cline is currently administrator for HHS' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Effective August 30th, Dr. Cline will leave this post, and RADM Eric Broderick, D.D.S., SAMHSA's Deputy Administrator, will become the agency's Acting Administrator. In addition, Kana Enomoto will become SAMHSA's Acting Deputy Administrator.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Says Investing in Prevention Could Save Billions

The U.S. could save $16 billion over five years by investing in disease prevention programs aimed at improving physical health and nutrition, and cutting smoking, according to a new report from the Trust for America's Health (TFAH), a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).

Volunteer Opportunity: Oregon Partnership Crisis Lines Summer Training

Oregon Partnership is seeking volunteers for its Alcohol and Drug Helpline/Suicide Crisis Lines. Training for volunteers on these crucial lines begins in September 2008. The HelpLine training schedule takes place on four consecutive Saturdays, from 9:00am – 4:00pm. Mandatory ASIST training will be held in October.

Participants will receive 56 hours of professional training, an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) certificate, Americorps opportunities for educational scholarship and 225 hours towards ACCBO certification.

Oregon Partnership's Alcohol and Drug HelpLine is a free, confidential referral service that provides information about substance abuse and refers clients to professional treatment providers. Every year the HelpLine serves thousands of Oregonians looking for a way to deal with the disease of addiction.

Umpqua Partners for a Drug-Free Future Presents Ramble for Recovery

The Ramble for Recovery 10k Run/3K Walk celebrates the hope of recovery from addiction through healthy competition. Individuals recovering from any addiction, who have a loved one in recovery, or who just want to come out to support the recovering community are welcomed to participate in the 1st Annual Ramble for Recovery.

The 10k Run/3K Walk begins at 8:00 am (7:00 am check-in) at the Stewart Park Hoffman Tennis Center Pavilion, in Roseburg, Oregon.

JV Games Yields to Pressure on Beer Pong Wii Game

After feeling the pressure from drug and alcohol prevention advocates across the country, JV Games announced that they changed the name of its WiiWare Beer Pong game to "Pong Toss" and removed all alcohol references. Prevention advocates say that while the move is a start, ultimately the game should be removed from store shelves.

SAMHSA Releases New Report on Nonmedical Use of Pain Relievers

Misuse of prescription drugs is second only to marijuana as the nation’s most prevalent drug problem. The annual average number of people using pain relievers nonmedically for the first time in the past 12 months has exceeded the number of new marijuana users since 2002. Accordingly, misuse of prescription pain relievers has been cited as a growing public health problem.
