Oregon Partnership (OP) created two core youth programs to help involve youth directly in its drug prevention efforts. These programs are the Oregon YouthLine and the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) which is based on the principle of peer-to-peer education, which is proven to be one of the best methods of drug prevention. The mission of the YAC is to bring youth voice and action to the challenges of ending substance abuse and suicide. What makes the YAC such an amazing experience, however, is how we go about fulfulling our goals. We try to show teens that they can still have a good time without using drugs or alcohol, so we do outreach events in the community like visiting the corn maize, Blazer games, and dances (yes, we hosted a city-wide dance last spring break with guest artist Ray J!).
In addition we have opportunities to learn and share the facts about drugs and alcohol and the science behind addiction with other youth of all ages throughout the Portland metro area and by going into middle schools, high schools and sumer day camps to teach prevention lessons. We have monthly meetings, as well as additional meetings for special projects; our members give from 2-15 hours a month depending on their commitment, with an average of 4 hours per month. We're currently in the process of recruiting new members.
